how do I modify the following formula to count only the "M" cell records in z11:z40, which also have a numeric result on the same row in the V column.
=COUNTIF(Z11:Z40,"M")

Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
If I have understood correctly, this should work just as well:
=SUMPRODUCT(--(Z11:Z40="M"),V11:V40)

Surely that won't work as a count if the numeric results are anything other than 1s?
