Countif on a range

Hello,
I'm trying to count the number of values that are over a certain length.
=COUNTIF(len(a3:a9),>4
Doesn't seem to work. Any thoughts for a formula (not VBA)?

Pressing F4 adds dollar signs when editing a formula. When not editing, F4 repeats last command.
