Countif question.

I'm trying to count the number of in a column that contain text, but not the word sample. There are some blanks in the column and the word sample appears in the column, but I would only like to count the cells that contain other words. Any help is greatly appreciated.

=COUNTIF(A2:A400,"?*")-COUNTIF(A2:A400,"sample")

If you're using Excel 2007 or later...

=COUNTIFS(A2:A10,"?*",A2:A10,"<>sample")
