countif

I am using a validation list box to displays a list of staff names. I then want to count the number of times a name is displayed in a cell (B8). Using the formula =countif(range, listbox cell ref) how do you put * around the name?

I used =COUNTIF(B8,"*(C2)*") but it doesn't work. B8 being the string of names and C2 being the name.

=(LEN(B8)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(B8,C2,"")))/LEN(C2)
