Please help on a countif function

How do you match two same columns in different worksheets and if they are the same to count the number of rows that match

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.

You need to be more specific...

Interpretation 1

=SUMPRODUCT(--(ws1!$A$2:$A$10=ws2!$A$2:$A$10))

compares two ranges record by record and produces an equality count.

Interpretation 2

=SUMPRODUCT(--ISNUMBER(MATCH(ws1!$A$2:$A$10,ws2!$A$2:$A$10,0)))

matches every record from ws1 to the relevant range in ws2 and produces a count including, as the case maybe, duplicate items in ws1.
