How do I count the number of cells in a range that contain a unique value

e.g. If A1=A, A2=B, A3=A, A4=C, A5=B

then my total should be 3

What does custom number format of ;;; mean?
Three semi-colons will hide the value in the cell. Although most people use white font instead.

Array-enter...

=SUM(IF(LEN(A1:A5),1/COUNTIF(A1:A5,A1:A5)))

Or, if you install morefunc.xll and you don't have formula generated "" in the range of interest...

=COUNTDIFF(A1:A5)

which is entered as a regular formula...

Note. To array-enter a formula, you need to hit control+shift+enter at the same time, not just enter.
