I have a column that has anywhere from 1-9 digit codes that are all letters. Ex. A1 = NNUBR, A2 = NBBBBB, A3 = UNWWNJK, and so forth.

Let's say I wanted to have a formula that counted the total number of times the letter "N" appears in Column A. I am having trouble figuring out what formula to use. I thought one of the COUNT, COUNTA, or COUNTIF functions would work but they don't seem to be.

I would imagine that I am missing something simple or maybe I am using the wrong Functions all together. If you can let me know what function would work, it would be greatly appreciated.

Excel Facts

Format cells as currency
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+4 to format cells as currency. (Shift 4 is the $ sign).
=SUMPRODUCT(LEN($A$2:$A$100)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE($A$2:$A$100,B2,"")))

where B2 houses the letter you want to count.
