I fear I have set myself up for failure, I am trying to count the value linked to a name in two different columns and that to equal in another column on another spreadsheet, see below;

Sheet 1
NameAmount
Mike 2
Jack 5
Mike 4
David 3
Dave 6
Jack 2
Sheet 2
Name Amount
Dave 6
David 3
Jack 7
Mike 6

<colgroup><col width="64" span="3" style="width:48pt"> </colgroup><tbody>
</tbody>

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome to MrExcel.

Does this work for you?...

=SUMIF(Sheet1!$A$3:$A$8,A3,Sheet1!$C$3:$C$8)

This assumes that the names on Sheet1 are in $A$3:$A$8
This assumes that the first Name to check on sheet 2 is in A3
This assumes that the values on Sheet1 are in $C$3:$C$8

Change any/all cell references to suit your layout.

I hope that helps.
