I have a very difficult situation that I am hoping people can help with!

I have attached the spreadsheet. I have a monthly diary, that people are assigned to working weekends. If the colour merged boxes go into Saturday then I need to count it as a 1 or a weekend worked, I am having trouble getting excel to recognise the coloured weekends/or blocked out weekends only? Wondered if anyone had any ideas or help please?

You can see there the yellow and Pink line has 2 weekends worked, the pale blue 1 weekend, the bottom line half way down has 1 weekend also. But if I could the text I get the number of merged boxes and if I try and target just the weekend cells it doesnt give me a return? Any help?
