Counting word occurrences

I want to count how many times the word Over occurs and then count how many times the word Under occurs.

Try this:

=COUNTIF(A12:A22,"*Over*")

=COUNTIF(A12:A22,"*Under*")

In the first argument, where I have A12:A22, put the range relevant to your example.

This formula will return the count in a single cell. It is an array formula. You must use Control+Shift+Enter to confirm the formula after it is entered.

=SUM(--(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("Over",A1:A11))))​

Why would you use that over COUNTIF?
