When I assign a number to the first entry, I would like each following entry to be automatically assigned the next number. These entries will not necessarily be on successive rows.

For example: I make an entry into B:4 and type 100 into B:5, The next entry I make is into F:4, I would like to have excel automatically put 101 into F:5. I am using excel 10. Thanks for any help.

Convert text numbers to real numbers
Select a column containing text numbers. Press Alt+D E F to quickly convert text to numbers. Faster than "Convert to Number"
Thanks for asking. There is no pattern at all for the lines. The columns will always be constant. I have not built the sheet yet, but the entry column will probably be E and the column for the auto entry would be F. The automatic number entry will always be the previous plus 1.

I will be assigning the first number by typing it in.
