Cross column calculations possible in Excel 2003?

I have a requirement to "count" like values from across 4 columns using Excel 2003.

Date Evaluator1 Evaluator2 Evaluator3 Evaluator4
10/31/2009 Tom Bob Bruce Kim
11/02/2009 Tom Bruce Kim
12/03/2009 Dave Tom Bruce Kim
12/05/2009 Mark Tom Kim

I need to be able to count up how many times each of these people did an evaluation (i.e. Tom = 4, Mark = 1, Kim = 4).

Another option for us could be that the evaluators all occupy one cell,

Date Evaluators
10/31/2009 Tom, Bob, Bruce, Kim
11/02/2009 Tom, Bruce, Kim
12/03/2009 Dave, Tom, Bruce, Kim
12/05/2009 Mark, Tom, Kim

Again, need to count up the number of times each people did an evaluation.

A little background, the data is actually sync'd with a SharePoint List (InfoPath2007).

Any suggestions, or alternative solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you !

Kim

COUNTIF should do it for you:

thank you for your quick response yesterday. I was able to follow your instructions to get the desired result. What I need now is to be able to count using multiple criteria. for example, I need to know how many times `kim`was an evaluator in 2009.

Based on what I could find, I attempted to use
=SUM((G2:J5="Kim")*(F2:F5="2009")) and then pressed ctrl shift enter, but I am not getting the results I need.

Is there any way of manipulating a pivot table across multiple columns to gather like type information.

Again, appreciate your help !
