In cell B2 I have typed the word "book" and C2 the word "leader".

I then apply filtering, then choose custom and try to use the 2 words to filter using the AND option.

Can you reference a cell in the Custom Filter option rather than just have ..Contains "book" AND contains "leader".

i.e can I have ..Contains, and then have a cell reference?

Excel Facts

Copy a format multiple times
Select a formatted range. Double-click the Format Painter (left side of Home tab). You can paste formatting multiple times. Esc to stop
You can use Data/Filter/Advanced filter to do this.

Advanced filter allows you to set a criteria range when filtering the list. You can filter the list in place or have the output start in a cell of your choice.

It's also very good for extracting a unique list of values from a list that has multiple instances of the same value.

The Help in excel will explain how it works.

Good Luck
