I want to change the formatting of a range of cells so that when I type ANY character in it, 3 letters will precede it. For instance, if I use the following in customer formatting, it gives me somewhat of the desired effect:

AZC#

This only works with numbers though. What do I replace the # with so that any character can be typed?

Excel Facts

What do {} around a formula in the formula bar mean?
{Formula} means the formula was entered using Ctrl+Shift+Enter signifying an old-style array formula.
Thanks all. I knew it would be an easy one. Doing a search in the help file for "format" and "custom" didn't yield the answer I needed. Thanks again.

I found in in the Excel help text

first I searched on FORMAT

then I selected CUSTOM from the keywords box

then I selected "CREATE A CUSTOM NUMBER FORMAT" from the topic window

Once there I saw a hyperlind at the bottom for "TEXT OR SPACING"
