I have a report with over 30 columns and hundreds of rows of data. This report is shared with and updated frequently by over 20 users simultaneously. Depending on the user's need, they would need to sort a different row at different times. However, this cannot affect the other users who need the report sorted by a different column. I'm thinking of having 2 tabs with identical data and both tabs would be updated (adding, deleting, etc) simultaneously, but can be independently sorted. Is this possible?

Excel Facts

Copy a format multiple times
Select a formatted range. Double-click the Format Painter (left side of Home tab). You can paste formatting multiple times. Esc to stop
Question: How have you managed to get Excel to allow multi-users simultaneously access the same document and make changes ?

The best method that will avoid conflicts and create permanent errors in your primary document is to provide each user access to their own document (a separate but identical workbook)
and allow the Master Workbook to intermittently access their workbook to obtain updates to the Master Workbook.

Listening to the description, this sort of thing usually lends itself better to be used in a program like Microsoft Access, that can easily hold large amounts of data, and allow mutliple users to be updating the database at once, without having to jump through any hoops or create some sort of workaround.

The report is currently shared on the one drive so it can be accessed by multiple users. It's almost impossible to sort now without causing Inconvenience to other users since the row they're working on will be located on a different row.

How to share Excel file for multiple users and co-author a shared workbook

Excel shared workbook limitations
When deciding to share your Excel file, please be aware that it may cause some troubles to your users because not all features are fully supported in shared workbooks. Here are some of the limitations:

  • Sorting and filtering by format
  • Conditional formatting
  • Merging cells
  • Excel tables and PivotTable reports
  • Charts and pictures
  • Data validation
  • Worksheet protection
  • Grouping or outlining data
  • Subtotals
  • Slicers and sparklines
  • Hyperlinks
  • Array formulas
  • Macros
  • A few more things
