Data protection in Rows

I work in a multi-user office on shared Excel documents, and very ofted the data gets messed up from conflicting sorts and other reasons. Most of the time data does not have to be edited, only cells need formatting. What would be the best way to protect the sheet from changes values, while allowing formatting, sorting, and filtering?

Excel Facts

Create a Pivot Table on a Map
If your data has zip codes, postal codes, or city names, select the data and use Insert, 3D Map. (Found to right of chart icons).
Lock the cells, but when you protect the sheet check the options for allowing formatting, sorting and filtering.

Thanks for your reply.

When I protect the sheet, locking the cells, I can't sort or filter because "...cell protected and/or read only." This happens even though I have formatting, filter, and sorting allowed when I protect the sheet.

Any idea why this happens?
