I found that TODAY() function shows current date that is updated automatically. The problem is that I can not use current date number for calculations in another formulas. Obviously, changing date's format to custom just visually shows the number I need, but still it can not be used in calculations. To be clear, I need that "July 14" would be displayed as just "14" in number format. Is there any way to do that?

Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+2 to format cells as time. (Shift 2 is the @ sign).
Hi
your explanation is not clear. Applying the "d" format will return the date number (14) but will not change the underlying value. If you need to extract the day, use the DAY() function

I am not completely clear on what your need is, but perhaps DAY(TODAY()) will do it.

EDIT NOTE: I see arthurbr had the same problem understanding exactly what you need and came up with the same suggestion.

Thank you both for quick response. You answered exactly what I was asking for.

How to calculate working days, not for the whole month, but until this very day?
Something like
=NETWORKDAYS(DAY(TODAY()))
isn't working.

Found a solution by myself, but can not delete previous post, so here it is:
=NETWORKDAYS(first date cell, TODAY())
