Date changes on Figure when pasting to Word

I have a figure in Excel that has dates on the X-axis (eg. January 2009 to December 2010). When I paste this chart into Word, for some reason the X-axis dates change to earlier years. I can get around it by pasting as a picture, but the picture results in fuzzy lines and text. Has anyone had this problem before? I am using Excel and Word 2007 on Windows XP.
