Date format in American instead of U.K. ... or bug?

Can anyone resolve or explain what is going on here, or is it just a bug?

I need the following set-up like it is, but in cell C1 I get the month January displayed as opposed to August.

1	08-Aug	August	January
Data / Formula	08/08/2015	=a1	=month(b1)
Format	dd-mmm	mmmm	mmmm

Month returns the month number (8 in this case). If you format 8 as mmmm, Excel will treat 8 as 8 days since 1/1/1900, since that is how it stores dates, which will be in January.

How can I format it so that it shows the month as August?

To restate Rory's comment, your formula in column C is wrong. it should be
=Month (A1)
but that gives the numeric value still of 8. Which means that if you want eight to correspond to "AUGUST", you have to use a list and the CHOOSE function.

Change the formula to =TEXT(A1,"mmmm"). I don't really see why you need this duplication though.
