Date Format in Spreadsheet cells

Microsoft seems to think that dates before 1900 do not exist, when I format dates in a spreadsheet, if the date is before 1900 it doesn't reformat, is there a way to get EXCEL to do all the date formats? (Historic dates back to 1000 AD would ne "nice". (I am a historian) Also MILITARY (Julian) date format isn't converted ( 25 May 1988 >> May 25, 1988)
