DATE NOT COPYING CORRECTLY

I'm trying to copy a date with a text label before the date and it seems to be copying a number instead of the date itself. Example, in W2 i have the words open date. In X2, I have 8/17/94. when I use the formula in Y2, =w2&" "&x2, I get OPEN DATE 34563. I'm thinking its a formatting thing but I can't correct it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jim
