I need a formula that will populate columns C thru E with any character if the start and finish dates in columns A & B cover the month in header in row 1. Hope this comes through OK.

A B C D E
1 Start Finish Nov Dec Jan
2 9/15/05 12/19/05
3 11/02/05 1/6/06

Try this formula.
the logic I have used is if start month is less than D1 and start month + difference between start and end is less than D1 then it gives "both".

=IF(MONTH(b2)>D1,"",IF(MONTH(B2)+DATEDIF(B2,C2,"M")<D1,"both",""))

play with month, datedif and if functions to arrive at what you want.
