is there a function for day name?
say in a1 2/28/05
in b1 would return the value Monday

perfect, one more question. if there isn't a date yet in a1 the value in b1 show Saturday, is there a way to keep the value blank until a date is entered in a1?

well maybe i didn't. can this be applied with a if statment? like in b1 if a1 is a date then =text(A1,"dddd") ?
