delete column based on contents

It’s been a while since logging in, but I am back with excel 2010 now. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
I am trying to come up with a way to delete a complete column based on the contents on the cells in that column. <o:p></o:p>
There may be 100 columns with 10 to 5000 rows give or take. The first 2 to 4 rows will be a header that will not really change, I want to look at the content where the data is. <o:p></o:p>
Within that data I have 2 separate criteria right now. I would like to say, if 4 or more rows in X column have ** for its content, or a given text “XXXX” then delete the whole column.<o:p></o:p>
The “**” is the actual content I would like to delete. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Can anyone give any suggestions to start with. I haven’t been doing much of this type of task in a long time. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Thanks!<o:p></o:p>

Dim Cnt As Long, LastCol As Long, COL As Long
Dim vFND As Range, v1ST As Range

MyVal = Application.InputBox("String to search for in columns?", "Search", "xx", Type:=2)
If MyVal = "False" Then Exit Sub

If MsgBox("Match partial strings? (No, means the entire cell must match)", vbYesNo, "Partial") _
   = vbYes Then Ans = 2 Else Ans = 1

Application.ScreenUpdating = False
LastCol = Cells(1, Columns.Count).End(xlToLeft).Column
On Error Resume Next
For COL = LastCol To 1 Step -1
    Set vFND = Columns(COL).Find(MyVal, LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt:=Ans)
    If Not vFND Is Nothing Then
        Set v1ST = vFND
        Do
            Cnt = Cnt + 1
            Set vFND = Columns(COL).FindNext(vFND)
        Loop Until v1ST.Address = vFND.Address
        If Cnt >= 4 Then Columns(COL).Delete xlShiftToLeft
        Cnt = 0
    End If
Next COL

Application.ScreenUpdating = True
End Sub

Hi, thanks for the response.
I have copied a few columns of the whole file here to see more what I am talking about. The top 2 lines will stay because that is the name and unit, then the rest is what I want to match 4 lines with and remove the columns with **.

Aha! People always find a way to throw in an unexpected wrench. The asterisk is a wildcard in Excel's search tools. Your two asterisks together effectively match EVERYTHING.

Excel provides a way around that though. If you need to search for an actual asterisk symbol on your sheet, and don't want the asterisk to act as a wildcard, you have to insert a leading tilde (~) character.

When the popup message appears at the beginning of the macro, enter ~** as your search string, then it will work fine.

Or edit this one line of code to make that the default:
Rich (BB code):
MyVal = Application.InputBox("String to search for in columns?", "Search", "~**", Type:=2)

The “**” is the actual content I would like to delete.

Excel provides a way around that though. If you need to search for an actual asterisk symbol on your sheet, and don't want the asterisk to act as a wildcard, you have to insert a leading tilde (~) character.

I knew there had to be something, I was trying the ' like you put in front of numbers that you don't want to make an equation from. I got something working fairly well, and learnd some other stuff as well. I am getting an object defined '1004' error now though. Basically I want to make a button, click the button will open a folder to select the data file to format, then run that file with the code we're working on. I can post the whole thing when I get a chance. Thanks for your assistance!

1004 errors are "object" errors, something it is being instructed to use it can't find. Could be a misspelled sheet name, workbook, cell construct, something like that.

A macro to use the file picker dialog to select a file then run this code on every sheet in that workbook would look like this:

Code:
Option Explicit

Sub ReformatSelectedFile()
Dim fName As String, MyVal As String
Dim wb As Workbook, ws As Worksheet
Dim Ans As Long, Cnt As Long, LastCol As Long, COL As Long
Dim vFND As Range, v1ST As Range

MyVal = Application.InputBox("String to search for in columns?", "Search", "~**", Type:=2)
If MyVal = "False" Then Exit Sub

If MsgBox("Match partial strings? (No, means the entire cell must match)", vbYesNo, "Partial") _
   = vbYes Then Ans = 2 Else Ans = 1

    With Application.FileDialog(msoFileDialogOpen)
        .InitialFileName = "C:\2010\Test\" 'opens this folder by default
        .AllowMultiSelect = False
        .Filters.Add "All Files", "*.*"        'everything
        .Filters.Add "Excel Files", "*.xls", 1 'default
        .Show
        If .SelectedItems.Count > 0 Then
            fName = .SelectedItems(1)
        Else
            Exit Sub
        End If
    End With

    Application.ScreenUpdating = False
    Set wb = Workbooks.Open(fName)
    On Error Resume Next

    For Each ws In wb
        LastCol = ws.Cells(1, ws.Columns.Count).End(xlToLeft).Column
        For COL = LastCol To 1 Step -1
            Set vFND = ws.Columns(COL).Find(MyVal, LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt:=Ans)
            If Not vFND Is Nothing Then
                Set v1ST = vFND
                Do
                    Cnt = Cnt + 1
                    Set vFND = ws.Columns(COL).FindNext(vFND)
                Loop Until v1ST.Address = vFND.Address
                If Cnt >= 4 Then ws.Columns(COL).Delete xlShiftToLeft
                Cnt = 0
            End If
        Next COL
    Next ws

    wb.Close True
    Application.ScreenUpdating = True

End Sub

Here is what I have so far, I was able to get a button linked and it is all working ok at this time. I will pass it around to a few others and have them use it and let me know what issues they have....

Sub deletecolumn()

' deletecolumn Macro
NewFN = Application.GetOpenFilename(FileFilter:="Excel Files (*.txt), *.txt", Title:="Please select a file")
If NewFN = False Then
' They pressed Cancel
MsgBox "Stopping because you did not select a file"
Exit Sub
Else
Workbooks.Open Filename:=NewFN
End If

[A4:JJ5000].SpecialCells(xlCellTypeBlanks).EntireColumn.Delete

For c = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, c) = "**" Then Cells(3, c).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For d = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, d) = "Tank 2" Then Cells(3, d).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For e = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, e) = "XX 699" Then Cells(3, e).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For f = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, f) = "Engine Family" Then Cells(3, f).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For g = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, g) = "type" Then Cells(3, g).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For h = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, h) = "Cleaner" Then Cells(3, h).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For i = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, i) = "System" Then Cells(3, i).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For j = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, j) = "Eng" Then Cells(3, j).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For k = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, k) = "Oil" Then Cells(3, k).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For l = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(3, l) = "Number" Then Cells(3, l).EntireColumn.Delete
Next
For m = 500 To 1 Step -1
If Cells(1, m) = "POINT_INFO" Then Cells(1, m).EntireColumn.Delete

Next
End Sub
