I am trying to use the "custom" function for adding standard error bars to a bar graph. I have a very simple set of 4 histograms each with their own calculated standard error in their own cells on the spread sheet. I've tried everything I can think of - including making the figure by adding new histograms one by one to the figure. But all the error bars are the same even when I try to select the different cells for each histogram. Can anyone help me with this?

You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK

On the Y Error Bars tab of the Format Data Series Dialog Box you can choose Standard Error as the Error Amount for the series. Excel will calculate the standard error for you, so you don't need it on your spreadsheet.
