Disabling automatic recalculation of linked workbooks upon manual calculation

I have a workbook which links to another two workbooks with the latter containing several hundred thousands of rows of source data. These data workbooks are locked two days after month-end while the "main" reporting workbook is used daily for the rest of the month.

To ensure the main workbook does not show refs upon opening I have changed the preferences in Edit Links and this works as expected. However, when pressing F9 to recalculate (all our workbooks are set to manual) the workbook attempts to check and/or recalculate every linked cell thereby showing value errors.

How do I ensure I'm able to recalculate the current workbook without references to the linked files? I have unticked the "When calculating this workbook: update links to other documents" which I thought was the solution but it didn't make a difference.

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
