do IF statements work on text in Excel?

I am trying to use an if statement on a cell that contains text so it looks like this:

=if(D2="fun",no,yes)

and it returns #NAME?

I have made sure that the field's format is text, have copied and pasted the data a few different times and ways (paste value, straight paste...), have tried with and without quotes and even with single quotes and nothing seems to work. I have been just sorting that column and manually putting in what I want it to say but it seems like this formula should work. was hoping to stop doing that.

any ideas?

Alternative method - use this custom number format (including quotes): "yes";;"no"
Use this formula: =--(D2="fun")
