Drop-down: default field

I have some drop-down menus, but when the a presses DEL and clears the field - it is messing up my formulas.

How can I pre-set the drop-down menu to show [%] whenever the DEL button is pressed?

Excel Facts

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
