Drop down list issues

I have a newly created worksheet and it is formatted as a table. Data is entered across the columns. There are drop down lists.
Everything was working great. Now, in one column only, when I chose an option from the drop down list, it repeats the word in the cell. For example, if the option chosen is overexertion, it will repeat that word 4 or 5 times in the cell. Some options are repeated 4 times, some 5 times. In the formula bar, it shows the entry as a single word but in the cell it is repeated.
I have deleted the row/s, reformatted, reloaded the list, shut down, restarted, etc. All to no avail.
Has anyone ever come across this issue?
