Please help,

I used to remember how to do this... Column A has "Sample Number" and Colum B has "Temperature"... how to put a formula to retrieve the "Sample Number" of the corresponding highest "Temperature"?

The “Temperature” readings have very slow oscillations. They are a monotonically increasing sequence (each consecutive term is greater than or equal to the term before it), until it reaches its peak “Temperature”, then this peak repeats on three to five consecutive readings, then it’s followed by a monotonically decreasing sequence.

Since the peak “Temperature” repeats for three to five rows, is it possible to retrieve the “Sample Number” of the CENTER of the peak “Temperature”?

Very interesting!

This sounds a lot like what I used to do working with xray spectrometer analysis.

How difficult this would be depends on the frequency of the temperature readings.

In the xray application the "peak" (we called it the plateau) wasn't necessarily the max reading.

If the plateau reading is the most occurring reading then you can narrow down the range (the mode) of where to look.

However, if you have non-plateau readings that equate to the mode then all bets are off! :laugh:

The plateau is clearly defined. However, the readings on the immediate sides of the plateau are the mode of the readings and make things a whole lot more complicated.

If you can post some typical sample data we might get a better idea of how to approach this.

You’ve got the exact idea. Imagine if I’m going to boil water, logging water temperature from the start (= ambient temperature), then it reaches its peak temperature, staying at that plateau for a little bit, than turning the heat off, continuing to monitor temperature while water is cooling down to ambient temperature again.

In a summary, my range of data only has one plateau of peak readings, surrounded by two monotonically decreasing sequences, just like the sample you posted.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Ok, let's assume that your plateau is made up of a series of the max readings.

Based on the sample data I posted:

=INDEX(A2:A20,MATCH(MAX(B2:B20),B2:B20,0)+COUNTIF(B2:B20,MAX(B2:B20))/2)

Returns Sample11 as the center of the plateau. The actual center would be between Sample10 and Sample11 but there's no data point there!
