Eliminating Duplication?

My data column:

John
John
Smith
Smith
Mary
Mary
Mary

and so on (runs into several hundred rows)

I want to reduce this column so that I avoid duplicates. Therefore just one entry for John, Smith etc.

Any suggestions?

Run Advanced Filter with the option Unique records only checked.
