[SIZE=-1]If I embed an Excel Spreadsheet into a Word Document, can I then display different portions of that same spreadsheet at different locations throughout the Word document, yet have them stay connected as one coherent calculation?
(changes made to numbers in the embedded Excel spreadsheet on page one of the Word document need to change the calculation results which are displayed on page 3 of that same Word document)

or

Is my solution to link to the Excel spreadsheet rather than Embedding, and use two files (both the Excel & the Word) rather than just a single Word file with embedded Excel information.

Thank you for your assistance with this question!

Fastest way to copy a worksheet?
Hold down the Ctrl key while dragging tab for Sheet1 to the right. Excel will make a copy of the worksheet.
I believe the answer is the latter -- link to the worksheet.

This sounds like my exact question.

I want to embed a spreadsheet into Word as an object.
However, the data is about 2 pages long, so it won't fully show.

I've tried embedding 3 portions of the data (all the same Excel file) so that it flows across pages. It seems as if each embedded object is a separate entity. That is, if I go into Object 1 and change something within the Excel file which is actually being displayed by Object 3, it doesn't work. Object 3 does not update. If I go into Object 3, I do not see the changes I made in Object 1.

Is this how embedding works?

Each time one embeds, even from the same file, it becomes a separate entity in Word?

Is there a way to embed one file and have different 'views' (sections) of it show in Word?

I realize that linking would probably solve my issues, but the pros and cons of linking and embedding have tipped me towards trying embedding first.

TIA

Seems to me that's the only way embedding could work. Otherwise, there would have to be some external spreadsheet to which the embedded objects refer -- which is exactly what you achieve by linking.

I guess my expectation was that Excel would realize the object(s) were all coming from a common file and handle that internally. Apparrently not. And I can understand that.

On to testing linking then it seems...

Did you know you can link to named ranges in a worksheet? The only way I know to do this is to paste/link and then edit the link in Word to change the range address to a range name. There is surely a more direct way, but linking to named ranges is infinitely more flexible than hard-coded ranges.

Good to know! Thank you.

I was wondering about that. I'm a big user of Named Ranges as they can make things so much more user friendly and dynamic.

Will a linked Excel range span across pages in Word? Guess I'll find out soon enough. But I can break it up if need be.

Thanks!
