I am trying to enter some text to a cell based on the text in a different cell with Conditional Formatting.
For example, I want cell A1 to have "YES" entered into it when cell A5 has the letter "Y" typed into it.
I don't want to use a formula in cell A1 since I will be typing other items in it and I use that column for a different formula elsewhere that it would not be counted as a blank cell and it would give me an incorrect answer.

Thank in advance.
MrGadgetMan.

Excel Facts

Workdays for a market open Mon, Wed, Friday?
Yes! Use "0101011" for the weekend argument in NETWORKDAYS.INTL or WORKDAY.INTL. The 7 digits start on Monday. 1 means it is a weekend.
You cannot do that with Conditional Formatting. Conditional Formats only "formats" the cells (color, font, number format, date format, etc). It cannot return values (that is what formulas do).
In order to do what you want would require VBA (if you do not want to use a formula).

Solution
If you are interested in the VBA solution, let us know and we can come up with the code for you on that.
We would just need to know when/how it should be run, i.e.
1. Do you want it to run against pre-existing data on your worksheet?
2. Do you want it to run automatically, real-time, as data is being entered into your worksheet?

Thank you for the offer but I decided to skip this venture for now.
I do have a different request for advice that I will start in another thread.
