Error "Couldn't get data from the Data Model"

I keep getting the following error when I try to refresh a pivot table (not Power Pivot).
"We couldn't get data from the Data Model. Object reference not set to an instance of an object".

I tried re-selecting the data source, but would get the same error message. I checked to see that I have all updates for Excel 2016 so that is not the issue. Is there any hot fixes for this error, or solutions that do not involve recreating all the pivot tables and charts?

Thanks for your help

Did you know Excel offers Filter by Selection?
Add the AutoFilter icon to the Quick Access Toolbar. Select a cell containing Apple, click AutoFilter, and you will get all rows with Apple
try closing out excel completely then reopening your workbook and refreshing.

I've noticed sometimes that it might be necessary to check the task manager prior to reopening and making sure there aren't any instances hanging in the background
