I've got columns of text and need to trim a "/" and everything after it, if it's there.

405347/OF
423883/OF
464708/C1-2
464919
50894/OF1-3
50908/OF1-2
50925/OF2-2
52413/F3

My formula is =IF(FIND("/",F2),LEFT(F2,FIND("/",F2)-1),F2) but if there's not a "/" it errors with #value.
The "value if false" is simply to print F2, but it doesn't seem to be working. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you know Excel offers Filter by Selection?
Add the AutoFilter icon to the Quick Access Toolbar. Select a cell containing Apple, click AutoFilter, and you will get all rows with Apple
Try:

<b>Excel 2007</b><table cellpadding="2.5px" rules="all" style=";background-color: #FFFFFF;border: 1px solid;border-collapse: collapse; border-color: #A6AAB6"><colgroup><col width="25px" style="background-color: #E0E0F0" /><col /><col /></colgroup><thead><tr style=" background-color: #E0E0F0;text-align: center;color: #161120"><th></th><th>A</th><th>B</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">1</td><td style=";">405347/OF</td><td style="text-align: right;;">405347</td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">2</td><td style=";">423883/OF</td><td style="text-align: right;;">423883</td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">3</td><td style=";">464708/C1-2</td><td style="text-align: right;;">464708</td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">4</td><td style="text-align: right;;">464919</td><td style="text-align: right;;">464919</td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">5</td><td style=";">50894/OF1-3</td><td style="text-align: right;;">50894</td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">6</td><td style=";">50908/OF1-2</td><td style="text-align: right;;">50908</td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">7</td><td style=";">50925/OF2-2</td><td style="text-align: right;;">50925</td></tr><tr ><td style="color: #161120;text-align: center;">8</td><td style=";">52413/F3</td><td style="text-align: right;;">52413</td></tr></tbody></table><table cellpadding="2.5px" rules="all" style=";background-color: #FFFFFF;border: 1px solid;border-collapse: collapse; border-color: #A6AAB6"><thead><tr style="background-color: #E0E0F0;text-align: center;color: #161120"><th><b>Sheet1</b></th></tr></td></thead></table><br /><br /><table width="85%" cellpadding="2.5px" rules="all" style=";border: 2px solid black;border-collapse:collapse;padding: 0.4em;background-color: #FFFFFF" ><tr><td style="padding:6px" ><b>Worksheet Formulas</b><table cellpadding="2.5px" width="100%" rules="all" style="border: 1px solid;text-align:center;background-color: #FFFFFF;border-collapse: collapse; border-color: #A6AAB6"><thead><tr style=" background-color: #E0E0F0;color: #161120"><th width="10px">Cell</th><th style="text-align:left;padding-left:5px;">Formula</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><th width="10px" style=" background-color: #E0E0F0;color: #161120">B1</th><td style="text-align:left">=VALUE(<font color="Blue">LEFT(<font color="Red">A1,FIND(<font color="Green">"/",A1&"/"</font>)-1</font>)</font>)</td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></table><br />

Alternatively, use Text-To-Columns, set "/" as the delimiter, and don't import the data after the first /.

Formula entered in B2 and copied down:

=--LEFT(A2,FIND("/",A2&"/")-1)

That will return the string as a NUMERIC number.

However, if any of your numbers have leading zeros that formula will strip them off.

If you might have leading zeros then you'll have to use this version which returns the result as a TEXT string:

=LEFT(A2,FIND("/",A2&"/")-1)

Wow. So many options to consider. Thank you all, I will try to understand how each formula works.

This has been an eye-opening excercise. It appears, as with any language, there are many ways to get what you want.

I need to make an effort to wrap my head around Excel formulas. The one drawback I see is that it's difficult to "step through" the formula and see what each function produces.

Just found the Evaluate Formula function. That should keep me busy for a while. :)
Not only can you step through and see how Excel evaluates a formula, the icon makes a nice forum avatar! ;)

It fits my personality perfectly!

I like the way the first example returns a numberic value, but I don't understand the "--". What's it called so I know what to search for? I've tried different searches and end up at some interesting websites that have nothing to do with -- or LEFT or or or.
