Exact match

I was of the understanding the MATCH function has a parameter to determine whether an exact match is required or not.

I have the value Apple in cell A1, Pear in cell A2.

I have the value Apple in cell C1.

I write this formula is cell C2:

=MATCH(C1, A1:A2, 0)

and I get the value of 1, as expected.

If I changed the value in cell C1 to Apple), I get N/A, also as expected.

However if in cell C1, I put the value Apple*, it also returns the value 1.

Is it because * is treated as a wildcard?

How can I amend my formula to find Apple EXACTLY and not Apple* as well?

=MATCH(SUBSTITUTE(C1,"*","~*"),A1:A2,0)
