Excel 07 - Shared file appears to open up a new copy

I have a shared Excel 2007 file on our network that users can access at 2 seperate locations and make changes. I have a macro that saves the file every 45 sec and updates it, allowing any changes made to be seen by everyone. It works pretty well with the exception of when 2 users are on it at the same time making changes. It appears that Excel will automatically open up another copy of the same file and name it a crazy name (like 8A6AAA530 or 62F6CF10). If the users are not quick to notice this extra copy, they may make their changes to this copy and not to the original file. When this happens, anyone on the correct original file is not seeing the changes they are making because they're using this weird copy.

Is there a way to prevent Excel from opening up a copy when multiple users are editing at the same time?
