Excel 2016 - Pivot table slicer - custom sort order not complete

I've inserted a slicer into a pivot table to control the month (including the year). I created a custom list of 36 months (Jan-18 to Dec-20 inclusive). I can make the slicer recognise and sort by the custom list I created but I have two problems:

1. the slicer only shows 32 of the 36 custom dates (so Aug-20 to Dec-20 are missing although they are present in my custom list)
2. one of the slicer buttons shows "Dec-17" which wasn't in the custom list I created.

Any pointers where I'm going wrong would be much appreciated.

A slicer will show the values of the dimension. A custom list is a reference for the sort order. Meaning the references that are missing are not in the data. The reference that's not in your custom list does appear in the data.
Or do I missunderstand?
Solution is using a datamodel, with a table holding your custom list. And use this in the slicer, and not the field from the data.
