Hello:I use excel 2000.

I have been getting an error message that says "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data or close other application"

i get this message when i already have a file open and try to open another file. Files are not big at all. this message caused me to closed the excel application completely and re-open the files.

anyone knows what this message means?

thank you in advance.

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
have you added data to the file, or lots of calculations as it opens

what file size is it on disk

how well appointed is the system, memory and hard disk free space

if you run task manager before opening, what sort of file size increase do you see

the files are really small, i never have this problem with my old laptop. i only experience this issue with my new computer. i have been using the same files on the old computer and not issue. there are a lot of space on the new computer. so, i am pretty sure it's not the size of the file. when i open another file, nothing is going on with the file that is already open (not in the process of calculating or anything like that).

thank you.

I used to have this error (using XL 2003) when there were vlookup formulas that were linked to a lookup table in another workbook. The lookup table in the other workbook was 10,000-15,000 rows.
