I've been 'volunteered' to set up a database for customer/client names and addresses. The data will be used to send out snail mailings.

I typically use Excel for any kind of simple database and was planning on using it for this as well... until I found out that one of my coworkers estimates he will enter 150k names per year.

I'm guessing that Excel isn't going to work very well with that many names. Has anyone succesfully used Excel (or something else) for this purpose?

Excel Facts

Quick Sum
Select a range of cells. The total appears in bottom right of Excel screen. Right-click total to add Max, Min, Count, Average.
I take it the names wont be entered manually!

What you need is a bit of kit that can cope with large tables. It would be possible to get excel to do this, but have you thought of Access or mySql? You could easily use another application to store the data, & still do te analysis in excel if that's what you're familiar with.

Well, let's just say that *I'm* not going to be entering the names. I think (hope) this will be one of those projects that never gets off the ground- all these names have to be entered in manually :)

I'm going to check out mySQL-- Thanks for the tip!
