Excel beeps when I switch between workbooks - why?

Hello,

This isn't a vba programming question it concerns a very annoying Excel habit that is driving me nuts. When I have two Excel workbooks open at the same time and am switching back and forth between them my system will more often than not produce a most annoying beep. Not everytime, but the vast majority of time it does. Switching between workbooks is already annoying enough (trying to keep various versions in sync with one another) but having to put up with the BEEP is the pits.

I was wondering if anyone knew why it does this? And, more importantly, is there a way I can switch between workbooks WITHOUT the BEEP?

Thanks,

George Teachman

How to show all formulas in Excel?
Press Ctrl+` to show all formulas. Press it again to toggle back to numbers. The grave accent is often under the tilde on US keyboards.
Does it make a difference how you flip between the two (Ctrl-Tab, Alt-Tab, Menu-Window (for 2003 & older))?

Does it do it with freshly opened Excel and two new blank workbooks?

The only way I've tried is with Alt-Tab (I didn't even know about Ctrl-Tab or the Menu-Window options mentioned.) I like the Ctrl-Tab and I'll start using that tool. I don't know how to invoke the Menu-Window (I'm using XP) option.

As far as I can tell, Excel only beeps when switching between open workbooks that I'm editing. Now that I think about, it doesn't beep the first time I switch between newly opened workbooks. The behavior seems to manifest itself only after I have edited one workbook or another.

Thanks,

George

I have the exact same problem and the only similar threads I could find have to do with PowerPivot. I did have that installed but I uninstalled it and still have the same issue. Driving me nuts!

King5815, glad I'm not the only one! I don't have PowerPivot installed and never did, so I don't think it is related to that. Somedays I just turn off my sound because of the beeps.
