Excel crashes when inserting a comment

This has got to be one for the record books.

I open Excel. I click Insert-> Comment. Excel crashes. I try to open an excel file with comments, Excel crashes. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled, Detected & Repaired. Nothing appears in the event viewer. I am at my wits end.

Any ideas on what this could be? My only guess is a windows issue vs. an excel issue, but I thought I'd at least ask.

Thanks,

Excel Facts

Using Function Arguments with nested formulas
If writing INDEX in Func. Arguments, type MATCH(. Use the mouse to click inside MATCH in the formula bar. Dialog switches to MATCH.
Only things I can think of off the top of my head are:
1. Try renaming the Excelnn.xlb (Excel10.xlb for Excel 2002, Excel11.xlb for 2003) in the C:\documents and settings\username\application data\microsoft\Excel directory to Excelnn.old and then open Excel.
2. Check the desktop appearance settings for tooltips, since this controls the default display of comments.

rorya,

I renamed Excel11.xlb, opened a blank workbook, saved as test.xls. This creates a new .xlb file. I then tried to insert a comment, Excel goes to 99% CPU.

I checked all of my appearance settings. I even changed a few things to see if this would eliminate my problem. No dice.

I've run virus scan to see if this is an issue. I've disabled virus protection. I've started in safe mode. I've deleted normal.dot.
Nothing solves the problem.

Thanks for taking a shot at this. I'll just keep trying. Please let me know if you have any additional ideas.

Try moving everything from your Temp folder into the recycle bin and everything from C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Forms likewise, then restart Excel?

I deleted the entire Temp folder @ C:\Temp. I removed all of the files in C:\...........\Forms. -> Still crashes.
The main problem is that nothing shows up in the event viewer, so I really can't tell what is hanging.

I'm open to any other suggestions you may have. I've already removed all of Office & reinstalled, still no dice.

Thanks,

Do you have another Temp directory at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp? You might also try clearing out the Temporary Internet Files folder.

As a last resort, I would remove Office, remove all references to Office from the registry, clear out the C:\Documents and settings\uysername\application data\microsoft folder and then reinstall
I will keep researching though!

I deleted all of the temp files in the user directory, still no luck. I'm not ready to uninstall office again, but I'm definitely getting there. It's just a pain to back-up all of the Outlook settings.

Thanks again for all of you help.
