We deleted some excel files off a USB key by accident, then downloaded a free demo of R-Undelete to get it back. Now when opening the file we get this error message, in part:

This file is not in a recognizable format

If you know the file is from another program which is incompatible with Microsoft Excel, click cancel, then open this program from its original application. If you want to open the file later in Microsoft Excel, save it in a format that is compatible, such as text format.......[etc]

Anyone know how to get past this?

How can you turn a range sideways?
Copy the range. Select a blank cell. Right-click, Paste Special, then choose Transpose.
One possiblity is that the version of Excel you are using to open
the file is older than the version that the file was created in.

Nah, I tried that and it said it couldn't find the files. This is a challenging problem.
