Excel Icon

Hey guys,

This might be outside the questions you normally see, but I recently ran a macro on a CSV and part of the code was to save the doc as an .xlsx. After doing this, the xl icon for the file changed to what looks like a small screenshot of the doc. Now all the xl docs I save look the same way. Any idea what's causing this and/or how to revert?

Excel Facts

Square and cube roots
The =SQRT(25) is a square root. For a cube root, use =125^(1/3). For a fourth root, use =625^(1/4).
What happens if you try to open one of those files in NotePad?

If I open with Notepad, the data comes out as a series of symbols and numbers.

However, I don't have a problem opening the docs in XL. They work normally, and I don't have any problems. It's just that the new icons aren't the same as the others on my desktop. Instead of the 2010 XL icon, it's a very tiny screenshot with the green XL logo over the bottom right corner.

Again, no abnormal behavior in the doc, just a strange icon.

Any thoughts?

In Windows Explorer:

Select a file displaying the wrong icon

From the "Tools" pulldown select "Folder Options"

Select the "File Types" tab

Click the "Advanced" button

Click the "Change Icon ..." button

Navigate to the icon you want

I'm on Windows 7, so there is no "Tools" dropdown in windows explorer.

I wish I could attach a screenshot so you could see. I've checked several sources and it seems like no one else is seeing this problem. Not a big issue. I guess I'll just live with it. Thanks for the interest and help.

In Windows 7, you can access the Tools (along with File, Edit, View, etc) menu item by pressing Alt. That tool bar should then display.

However, I don't see the icon change option in there. Nor by right clicking and going into properties. Therefore I don't know how to change the default icon for Office documents.

Interesting question. I'd be interested to see the solution, as I think I'd like to see the previews instead of the icons myself.

You'd think, but the preview is waaaay too small to be of any use. All of them look the same. If I could find a good place to post this screenshot, I'd link to it. Or if there was a way to attach it to this post...
