Excel is formatting cells as date

This may sound like a conspiracy but it's not. I have a workbook that I did not originate. When I add a new tab to this workbook, Excel formats every cell in the new workbook as a date using the Mar-12 format. I would like the default format to be general.

Any suggestions?

Thank you, Ed Stockton

Create a Pivot Table on a Map
If your data has zip codes, postal codes, or city names, select the data and use Insert, 3D Map. (Found to right of chart icons).
I finally figured it out. I'm good with math but don't usually care what the results look like as long as the formulas return the correct answers. However, I finally discovered that the Normal default was set to a date format. The link you provided discussed lots of things but primarily in the 1997 to 2003 versions of Excel which bear little resemblance to the 2016 version. For someone else who might reference this thread, to change the default format go to the Home tab, the Styles section and right click on the Normal tab. Click on modify and then Format. This will bring up the Format Cells dialog box where you can set the default style for the entire workbook.
