Excel keeps selecting cells even when I take my hand off the mouse.

So recently I've been having trouble with Excel. I try to selecting a range of cells in a worksheet but even when I stop selecting (ie., un-click the button on my mouse and remove my hand from the mouse entirely) the Excel selection continues, as if I'm still actually selecting cells. This is a recent development and I'm not sure if it's because of a recent buggy Office update.

Things I have tried:

I made sure it's not it's not the "extend selection" issue (I tried pressing F8 on and off several times).

Made sure Excel is on "Normal" view (although I've tried others and the issue persists).

Made sure File -> Options -> Advanced -> "Extend data range format and formulas" checkbox is checked (although I tried using Excel with the checkbox both checked and unchecked -- the issue persists either way).

I rebooted my computer (didn't help).

I tried running Excel in Safe Mode (didn't work).

I tried using different mice (Excel still doesn't work when I use different mice -- it continued to select cells for several seconds).

I uninstalled Office 365 (and Excel with it) and re-installed and still Excel keeps selecting when I take my hand off the mouse -- ghost in the machine!

Has anyone run into the issue with Excel recently / found a solution for it?

Btw, this selection issue only happens with Excel -- Everything is cool with Word.

Any help appreciated!

Hi Michael,

No macros running and no recently installed addins. I've tried running Excel in Safe Mode and still have the same problem.
