currently on VPN.....suddenly a workbook that links to other workbooks on the same network drive messes up

seems like instead of using the full network path (ie \\ABC.XYZ.EFG\ABC...) to the drive letter ("F:\...") seems to work so I save the workbook...however, when I open the workbook, the paths are reverted to the netwrok path instead of the drive letter....why does it do that?

there are multiple links, so the what I do is a find and replace to replace the network path with the drive letter....what's messed up it doesn't work for all the links....

im using Excel 365/2016
