Excel Macros performing functions on other applications?

I was wondering if Excel Macros could have the ability to copy and paste data from an external application?

I ask since at work our reports are all generated into tables updated on an intranet link so it's only accessible on internet explorer. Is it then possible for a macro to open up Internet Explorer, go to the website where the data is kept, and copy that data straight into an Excel Spreadsheet?

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
You should be able to automate most if not all of that via the Macro Recorder; familiarise yourself with the web query capability of Excel.
