When did Power Query debut in Excel?
Although it was an add-in in Excel 2010 & Excel 2013, Power Query became a part of Excel in 2016, in Data, Get & Transform Data.

Check the links (menu Edit - Links) to see which files you are linked to and the status (auto or manual). If the file that you are linked to is already open, then you won't get that message when you open this file.

the status is set at automatic & manual is greyed out & I'm getting this even when the files I link to aren't open

Click the button "Open Source". It it opens straight away, the link is fine. If it opens the "File Open" dialogue, Excel has "lost" the file that you have linked to.
