Excel no longer asks if I want to update links

It used to but not any more, how can I get this back ?
 

Excel Facts

Enter current date or time
Ctrl+: enters current time. Ctrl+; enters current date. Use Ctrl+: Ctrl+; Enter for current date & time.
Check the links (menu Edit - Links) to see which files you are linked to and the status (auto or manual). If the file that you are linked to is already open, then you won't get that message when you open this file.

the status is set at automatic & manual is greyed out & I'm getting this even when the files I link to aren't open

Click the button "Open Source". It it opens straight away, the link is fine. If it opens the "File Open" dialogue, Excel has "lost" the file that you have linked to.

YUp, the links are fine but I would like to be asked if I want to update links when opening a workbook
